Chapter 4
Rogelio lunged at me, his hand raised, but before he could touch me, the office door swung open. Two federal agents, whom I had called at dawn, stepped inside.
"Rogelio Ward?" the lead agent asked, holding out a pair of cuffs. "We’re here regarding a series of reports on corporate fraud and public safety violations."
Rogelio looked at me—not with the bully’s sneer, but with a sudden, dawning terror. He realized then that I hadn't just taken his money; I had systematically erased the lie of his genius. He hadn't been a businessman; he was a criminal, and I was the strategist who had held the keys to his cage the entire time.
As they led him away, his suit disheveled and his ego shattered, he screamed that he would destroy me. But I didn't look back. I turned to the investors, my hand steady. "I have a new proposal for the company’s restructuring," I said. "And I believe you'll find it much more profitable than what you've been funding."
Outside, the air felt different. I walked back to the taxi where my mother was waiting. She saw my face, and for the first time in months, she didn't see the sorrowful daughter—she saw the woman who had fought for her.
"Is it done?" she asked.
"It's just beginning," I said.
I had been the secret behind his success, but now, I was the force behind his failure. And as we drove away, I knew that for the first time in five years, the only person I was subsidizing was my own freedom. The empire was gone, but for the first time, I was the one holding the map.
THE END.
